7 Myths about solar eclipse

First Solar eclipse 2020 is going to occur on 21st June this year. It will start at 9:15 AM and will end at 3:04 PM. Full eclipse is expected to occur at 12:10 PM

Solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and the earth comes in the same line with respect to a particular region in the Earth and a ring of fire appears when the moon fully blocks sun light coming towards earth from the sun.
We all have experienced solar eclipse number of times  in our life.  And each time specially in our Barak Valley area, we hear various myths from our elders, various dos and don'ts which are to be followed during solar eclipse.
Here we will talk about 7 such myths and discuss their credibility in the light of Science and Islam.

1) Not to cut vegetables by pregnant women.
This is the wide spread myth about solar eclipses. They say that if pregnant lady do the vegetable cutting, her infant is going to born with cut nose/ear/finger or atleast with a cut mark.

2) Pregnant women must not go outside.
This is the most bizzare burden laid down to the pregnant women by the elders of our society with outdated mentality and superstition. Few argue that it is a tradition as darkness during eclipse might cause pregnant women to hurt herself. But dude in no way it is mandatory. You can take precautions.

3) Pregnant lady should not lay down in bed.
Well after restricting her from going outside the superstitious people do not want her to take rest in her bed which is extremely necessary during this condition. These myths have no logical base but astonishingly are being followed widely in our society.

4) Pregnant women should stay idle.
My Lord ! What a pity. They don't want her to go outside. They don't want her to take bed rest. Now they are not allowing her to do basic kitchen or personal work during this time ! Surely some mad guys created these social rituals which are undoubtedly baseless and complete myth.

5) Not to eat.
This is general instruction given to all family members that they should not eat anything during the eclipse as it is forbidden. But the question remains as who or why it is forbidden and it is not known to anyone.

6) Throw away the curry already prepared.
Well this is also a custom to put burden on the ladies of our house. They say that the curry which is already prepared before solar eclipse has now become untouchable. This baseless notion of myth carriers have no valid logical and religious explanation yet it is widely observed in our society.

7) Not to cook anything.
Well you can't eat anything during this period, you have to get rid of all the cooked food in this period and now they ask you not to cook anything during this period. What a pity ! Stay hungry. None can help you in this. It is very much clear that those who made these rules want you to be afraid of everything. Please open your eyes. Islam has not taught you to do or believe in anything like this. Science has proved already that there is no relationship between the eclipse and all the above stated myths.

Our prophet (pbuh) taught us that birth and death are not related to solar eclipse. Indeed the sun and the moon are the mysterious miracles of our God. We should feel this miraculous celestial incident and be thankful to the Almighty for giving us Iman. He is the one who convert days into nights and nights into days. All praise and thanks be to him. We have been encouraged to offer 2 Rakat Salatul Kusoof in congregation during eclipse.

Now Please talk with your friends and family. Share these myths and their voidity. Do not try looking directly towards sun. It is a scientific fact that harmful rays may damage your eye sight.
